SONG OF THE DAY: Russian Circles – “309”

|a splattered corneal roan|

On their new album Empros, Chicago-based trio Russian Circles makes a convincing case for instrumental post-[insert genre].  “309,” Empros‘ opener, hits harder than anything the band has done before, due in equal part to the guitar tone (fits right in with the cover’s pervasive reds, for all you synesthetes out there) and the rhythm section’s locked-in chemistry.  Emrpos is available now on Sargent House.  You can also stream/buy it off Russian Circles’ Bandcamp page.

SONG OF THE DAY: Penguin Prison – “Don’t Fuck With My Money”

Don’t Fuck With My Money by Penguin Prison

Weird artist name, weird song name – what does that mean for the music? Neon perfection apparently. Enjoy and check out the remix by Jay Shepheard below.

SONG OF THE DAY: Wild Child – “Pillow Talk”

I discovered Wild Child at a time when I needed it most. It was the Wednesday of block break, the snow was pounding its icy coldness down onto Colorado Springs, and I was stuck at a lifeless airport. There’s something about sugary-sweet folk duos that make everything seem at least for a few minutes, that life is about attaining some mystical romance. It was a much needed release from the anxiety of traveling. Since then, I’ve been hooked.  You can check out their debut album, Pillow Talk (2011) now!

SONG OF THE DAY AND UPCOMING SHOW: Murs

“Love and Appreciate” is off Murs’ collab album with 9th Wonder, Murray’s Revenge, released in 2005. Murs has had a long career, and is touring for the album he released at the beginning of this month, Love and Rockets, Vol. 1. I know it’s on a Sunday night at the Black Sheep… tickets are only $15 though, and it will be a fun show. Here’s a link to the show, see you there!

SONG OF THE DAY: Frightened Rabbit — “Old Old Fashioned”

January. from Sam Erickson on Vimeo.

Old Old Fashioned is from the album The Midnight Organ Fight, released in 2008 under Fat Cat Records. Not only is this a great song, but I’m doing some shameless promotion of my friend Sam, who’s an awesome filmer and editor. The video above was made by him last winter, which means he’s gotten even better since then. Check it out!

SONG OF THE DAY: 1,2,3 – “Work”

1,2,3’s debut album, New Heaven (out on Frenchkiss Records) has the vibrancy and versatility I think is missing from a lot of rock records these days. It’s really hard to describe the album without going far way into detail. Expect a conglomeration of influences ranging from Deerhunter to Modest Mouse. They are different and interesting — check them out if you’re into that sort of thing.

SONG OF THE DAY: Mates of State — “Palomino”

From their album Mountaintops ( Barsuk, 2011)

SONG OF THE DAY: The Sylvers – “Boogie Fever”

Sorry, I’m a day late but I think the following awesomeness will make up for it. I’m not really sure what I can say to introduce it beyond that. If you don’t get why this is awesome then I can’t explain it to you. If you don’t like Soul Train, you might as well stop now.

Performance followed by Soul Train’s signature “Boogie Challenge”

SONG OF THE DAY AND UPCOMING SHOW: Blue Scholars

“Joe Metro” is off Bayani, released in 2007. Those of you from Seattle will love the video, even though I know you’ve seen it already. At the Black Sheep this Saturday, the tickets are only $13 so get at it!

SONG OF THE DAY: TV Girl – “Benny and the Jetts”

TV Girl has this special ability to channel the past without trying to. Hailing from San Diego, the easy going and carefree attitude of California reflects in their music. People have compared TV Girl to the likes of Beck, Panda Bear and Cults. If you like feeling nostalgic, you should check TV Girl out.
