If tickets aren’t sold out yet, they’ll go soon, so get on that. This is the first winter show Red Rocks has ever hosted. Ever. This song is “Guns and Cigarettes” by Atmosphere, off the album Lucy Ford. Slug is one of my favorite MCs ever, and puts on a great show. Grieves is also coming into a style all his own, and is from Colorado. I can’t speak for Common, but it’s sure to be a great time.

Remember last weekend when you went to the Invasion rave thing in Worner and got really rowdy and wild and had an awful time? The SOCC is here to help you replace those painful memories.

Remember last weekend when you had no interest in going to that Invasion rave thing in Worner and you stayed home or did something else more pleasant/less in Worner? The SOCC is here to help you participate in on-campus events that you can believe in.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This Saturday, at 9pm, in The Carriage House, SOCC DJs will be spinning some seriously fresh tracks for you to sway, juke, bump, and/or grind to. Sets will feature original music by student producers, as well as a diverse mix of other stuff that you may or may not have heard before, but will probably like.
LINE UP:
Jitu Varanasi (AKA Lejittbeatz) — Hip-Hop, including some self-produced beats/remixes
Anna Forster-Smith and Erin O’Neill — Indie/Electro/Hip-hop/Dance
Addis + Henry — Not SOCC DJs, but cool dudes. Set of original electronic material
Michal Varga — Elektro-House. Heavy Euro Jamz
You could go to a house party on Weber and dance uncomfortably to “that new Ke$ha joint” on some stranger’s sticky living room floor. OR, you could come to the Carriage House and get yr freak on in a cool spot to some real music. ITS UP TO YOU.
(we have nothing against Invasion or its organizers. we’re just trying to throw a party of our own)
Hailing from the incredibly prolific LA Low End Theory scene (think Flying Lotus, Teebs, Samiyam, etc.), this 21 year old producer crafts some of the most mature “dubstep” in the blogsophere right now. Where so many contemporary electronic musicians simply wield The Womp like a weapon in a war against artful restraint, Shlohmo challenges himself and his listeners to transcend the desire for visceral indulgence, opting instead to dwell in the ethereal realm of texture and stasis. If music is sex, then Shlohmo is tantric. Each song is a kind of subtle mediation upon itself; establishing a theme and then asking “why?”, his music quickly betrays its own futility while nevertheless insisting upon its beauty. An irrepressible remixer, Shlomo applies this deconstructive tactic to other people’s songs as well, and, in the process, he manages to distill something eminently listenable from even the most frustratingly bad pop-gangsta-rap song (for example).
Shlohmo will be coming to The Other Side at Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom on Tuesday, October 18th. Doors open at 8:00pm, and tickets are $10. Click the “Concerts” link for more information.
The Lowdown: the two-day/-night event will spotlight some of the nation’s best underground electronic acts and some of Colorado’s best local acts alongside one another.  The 30+ artists featured run the genre gamut from ambient (the bristling and warm Quiet Evenings), to drone (The Kevin Costner Suicide Pact), to dreampop (Candy Claws, HAPPY NEW YEAR), to ambient folk (Chris Rehm), with some post-nineties shoegaze (Colorado Springs’ Junior Low) thrown in to round things out.  Tennis, of Llamapalooza 2011 fame, and How to Dress Well headline the festival.
The Site: GOLDRUSH 2011 (featuring links to each band’s Bandcamp or Myspace, as well as contact info)
The Sampler: GOLDRUSH Sampler (a FREE compilation of brand new tracks from 20 of the festival’s performers)
The Tickets: Hi-Dive.com
The Sponsors: Speaker SnacksTome to the Weather MachineMagic Teepee
Stay tuned to theSocc.org for artist profiles and more.
