SONG OF THE DAY: Alabama Shakes – “Be Mine”

While I haven’t posted any of their stuff on site before, if you listen to the show you know how I feel about this up and coming group out of Athens, Georgia. They have a sound that is a little bit Black Keys, a little bit Rolling Stones, and a lead singer who takes channels Janis Joplin and James Brown and mixes them up just right. They released an eponymous EP last year in September but Boys & Girls, released today on ATO Records, is their first full length production. I think it is pretty sweet, and even though you might have heard many of the songs before if you have been following them the new stuff is great and it all goes together well. Listen to one of those new tracks “Be Mine” below and head over to iTunes to get the album here, or listen to the whole thing first courtesy of NPR here.

SONG OF THE DAY: Kindness — “House”

SONG OF THE DAY: The O’My’s — “My House”

It took me about ten seconds to realize that I love this song. It is the kind of song that every summer bbq needs, that goes well with sunsets, friends, brews, etc. It is super soulful and laid back. Even better, their video for the song fits perfectly. Enjoy both!

SONG OF THE DAY: Kavinsky feat. Lovefoxx – “Nightcall”

This song is off the Drive Soundtrack, released in September ’11, on Lakeshore Records. Check out the rest of the album for more amazing music, and a lot of original score pieces by Cliff Martinez. Still waiting to hear this song at a sweaty house party, try not to seduce that lonesome looking stranger to this song.

SONG OF THE DAY: Wye Oak — “Fish”

Wye Oak is based out of Baltimore and is comprised of Jen Wasner and Andy Stack.  Wasner sings and plays guitar, and Stack drums and plays bass simultaneously (?!) using his left hand to play the bass line and his right hand and feet to drum.  This video features the art of Baltimore artists Katherine Fahey (cutouts) and Michael O’Leary (lighting and cinematography).  Civilian was released in March 2011 on Merge Records.

“>04 Jump, Jive, An’ Wail

If you don’t know Louis Prima then you’re missing out. Born in New Orleans “The King of Swing” made hits for almost 40 years. What’s a better way to start the Fat Tuesday than doing as Louis says and “Jump, Jive, An’ Wail.”

SONG OF THE DAY: Michael Kiwanuka – “I’m Getting Ready”

This guy has a great sound that is way beyond his years (24). Hailing from Britain, he has supported Adele on her tour and won some competitions, including BBC’s Sound of 2012 pole for January, but I think he more than has the potential to be a big star. Not too big of course, he’s too good for that. Anyway, enjoy the silky soulful sound and get his EP, I’m Getting Ready from Communion Records.

SONG OF THE DAY: Kisses – “Midnight Lover”

This song is off Kisses’ 2010 album Heart of the Nightlife, released on This Is Music.

SONG OF THE DAY: Frank Ocean — “Voodoo”

Frankie O’ (don’t worry, were friends so I can use nicknames) just released the following track on his tumblr, by which I mean to say his website. It’s got a classic “love you baby” r&b background with slightly odd but actually pretty poetic lyrics. It’s short but I sure hope there is more of this on whatever upcoming project it’s from. Frank-Ocean-Voodoo

Enjoy!

SONG OF THE DAY: Prince — “I Wanna Be Your Lover”

Not a lot to say. I really like this song. It is a classic from an artist who was in many ways ahead of his time. And crazy…he was sort of crazy. Enjoy.
