Either still in high school or recently graduated, the members of Berkeley’s favorite rising band, Local Hero! have got something going. They have managed to take stories of the seemingly simple subject matter of high school life and tell them in ways that are not only fun, but thoughtful and creative. Few bands so young match Local Hero!’s sound; at first listen I assumed they were much older and had played together for years. Check out the rest of their full album, From Timid to Timbuktu (2012), and keep an eye out for when these Berkeley kids finally get their break; it’s going to happen.

I haven’t been able to sit still since I saw a trailer for the album a few months ago, and now there is a music video! Future’s practically whispers his auto-tune drenched hook for a perfectly faded effect. The original version of this track drew a lot of controversy over a lyric from Ross that had women’s groups across america protesting, eventually losing him a multi-million dollar Reebok deal. In his absence, this remix showcases a particularly good verse from wiz, clearly forcing himself to experiment with new flows, but is actually one of 6, each with a different feature, to be released every week. Mike Winkelmann, better known as Beeple, is an incredible artist who has produced worked in a variety of different mediums. His short films have been featured at Ann Arbor Film Festival, onedotzero and Portable Film Festival, to name a few. He currently releases his work on Flying Lotus’s Brainfeeder label. This video for Flylo’s “Kill Your Co-Workers” off the 2010 Pattern + Grid World EP seems innocent and fun until about the 1:20 mark, when “kill mode” is activated and slaughter begins. It then ceases when “kill mode” is switched off and everything returns to normal again. Beeple’s video complies with the uptempo track, only with a twist of gore glazed with charming pixellated animations. For more of Beeple’s extraordinary and innovative work, check out his website.

Though he may be getting on in years, Charles Bradley aka “The Screaming Eagle of Soul” has still got it. His debut album dropped two years ago, but it already feels like Bradley is a veteran when you hear the way he can evoke emotion through his powerful voice. His second album, Victim of Love, dropped a week ago and is worth multiple listens. The single, “Strictly Reserved for You,” gives a fantastic first taste for those new to Bradley and surely will remind previous listeners why they love soul so much.

This unreleased track was originally meant for the album. Its a hidden gem because of the thick, textured beat by producer Canai Finch, that’s both soulful and aggressive masterfully. Standout verses from both Kendrick and Jeezy.
